BIOGRAPHY
James Hugh
Calum
Laurie,
aka Hugh
Laurie,
was born
on June
11, 1959
in Oxford.
Son of a
golden
medalist
at the
1948
London
Olympics
as part of
the
British
national
team, Hugh
is the
youngest
of four
children.
At school
university,
Hugh was a
rower and
became one
of the
nation's
best and
rowed for
the
England
youth team
in 1977
and for
Cambridge
in 1980.
Later in
1978 he
joined the
Cambridge
Footlights
where he
met Emma
Thompson
and was
introduced
by Emma to
Stephan
Fry in
1980. Fry
and Laurie
collaborated
on a
sketch
called '
The Cellar
Tapes ',
principally
written by
Fry and
Laurie,
which they
entered in
the
Edinburgh
Festival
Fringe in
1981.
In his
last year
at
university,
Hugh
Laurie was
elected to
be
president
of the
Footlights
and Emma
Thompson
vice-president.
In the end
of the
year the
Footlights
toured
throughout
England
and
Australia.
Laurie,
Fry,
Thompson,
Ben Elton,
Robbie
Coltrane
and
Siobhan
Redmond
appear in
a new
sketch
comedy
show for
Granada
Television,
Alfresco;
BBC serieS
Black
Adder with
Rowan
Atkison
and Jeeves
and
Wooster
with
Stephan
Fry.
The
English
sketch
based
comedy ' A
Bit of Fry
and Laurie
' was
broadcast
by BBC
between
1989-1995
with Fry
and Laurie
as the
show's
writers.
Since then,
Hugh
stared in
various
films such
as
Sense and
Sensibility
(1995),
Cousin
Bette
(1998),
Stuart
Little
(1999) and
Stuart
Little II
(2002),
Maybe Baby
(2000),
Girl From
Rio
(2005),...
Besides
acting,
Hugh has
written
the
best-seller
novel '
The Gun
Seller ',
directed
television
programs,
is a song
writter,
musician
and wrote
articles
for The
Daily
Telegraph.
